ACEPHAP’s Director attends 78th World Health Assembly

Prof. Hadiza Shehu Galadanci, the director of African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) Bayero University Kano and AlignMNH Steering Committee Member has last month, attended the 78th World Health Assembly. This year’s meeting themed, One World for Health, was held in Geneva, Switzerland from the 19th to 20th of May, 2025 with various health professionals and leaders from member states in attendance.

In the words of Prof. Galandanci, after several meetings and discussions at the congregation, “It’s clear that the maternal and newborn health community—and indeed the global health community at large—stands at a critical juncture.

More so, the event focused on the subject, “Why integration and alignment matter more than ever” the director explains that, there was broad agreement throughout the meetings regarding the pressing necessity of integrating health services, going beyond disjointed methods to provide more person-centred treatment.

She also notes that, “at the same time, we heard calls for a more comprehensive reset, arguing that this is a time for global health to reflect on itself due to changes in the financial landscape. Doing better and focusing on what nations claim they need most is more important than just getting more done with less. Priorities of the nation must be matched by donors and implementing partners, not the other way around.”

The Director then identified that “The spirit of collaboration is essential if we are to close persistent equity and access gaps, particularly in Africa, where recent negative impacts on health systems have been the most significant” while citing the words of the Honorable Minister of Health in Malawi, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, “When you invest in Africa, you invest for the whole world.”
