ACEPHAP Strengthens Research Capacity through Grantsmanship Training in Zaria

African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) has hosted a 5-Day Grantsmanship Training in Zaria, bringing together researchers and academics for an intensive capacity-building program focused on strengthening research development and grant writing skills.

The training featured contributions from experienced facilitators, including Prof. Baba Maiyaki, Dr. Ibrahim Nashabaru, Dr Fatima Muhammad, Prof. Taiwo Amole, Prof. Zubaida Faruq, Dr. Garzali Ibrahim Umar and Dr. Mansur Ramalan, who shared their expertise and practical insights with participants.

The training was designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to develop strong research ideas, identify relevant funding opportunities and prepare competitive grant proposals. Participants are gained insights into the funding landscape, major funding agencies and strategies for matching research interests with appropriate funding opportunities.

The sessions also provided participants with practical approaches to developing compelling research questions and hypotheses, demonstrating the significance and innovation of research ideas, and building strong and complementary research teams.

Key areas covered during the training included responsible conduct of research and research ethics, literature searching using PubMed, research methodology, observational epidemiological study designs and clinical trials. Participants also explored institutional support for grant development, the translational potential of research and the principles of developing realistic and effective research budgets.

The enthusiasm and active participation demonstrated throughout the training created an engaging and enriching learning environment, reflecting the participants' commitment to strengthening their research capacity and contributing to evidence-based solutions to population health challenges.

Through initiatives such as the Grantsmanship Training, ACEPHAP continues to support researchers with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to develop impactful research and compete for funding that can advance health and development outcomes in Africa.
