ACEPHAP and Every Pregnancy meet with partners to explore role of Islamic philanthropy in scaling solutions for mothers and newborns’ health
Healthcare for pregnancy and safe delivery is one of the core areas that the Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP). The Center focuses on improving the quality of life of mothers and children in Kano and beyond. In this continued drive, Prof. Hadiza Galadanci, the Director of ACEPHAP and Marleen Vellekoop, the Chief Operating and Strategy Officer of Every Pregnancy, brought together Muslim-led community organizations on 17th November 2025 at the center.
The organizations facilitated by Prof. Galadanci and Marleen, expressed their enthusiasm for a joint campaign that will channel Islamic giving to mothers and newborn health. This includes Waqf, an Islamic way of supporting the vulnerable through funding by wealthy people in the communities. Prof. Galadanci said the organisations or stakeholders invited for the session have long been supporting mothers’ health in Kano. Every Pregnancy and ACEPHAP will support partnership between the organizations to facilitate wider reach and sustainability.
Marleen explained the Every Pregnancy is a coalition of over 50 Muslim-led organizations. They have united under one goal: to make every pregnancy safe. As Nigeria contributes to over 28% of maternal deaths globally, organizations in Nigeria have an important role to play.
Hence, ACEPHAP and Every Pregnancy will work together to ensure more sustainable funding for maternal and newborn health, anchored in faith and trust. Funds will be channeled to a holistic package of maternal and newborn health medicines and interventions.
Organizations that attended the meeting include FOMWAN, Alkhairat Waqf Foundation, Ungoggo Waqf Foundation, Dawakin Kudu Waqf Foundation, Gaya Waqf Foundation and Pathfinder International, among others.
